Across Southern California and especially in Los Angeles and surrounding communities, stem cell therapy has quickly risen to fame. It’s the latest trend to treat joint pain and arthritis. Some patients swear by the stem cell treatment, experiencing immediate and lasting pain relief that far outperforms the standard cortisone or viscosupplementation injections. For these people, spending money out-of-pocket to postpone or potentially eliminate the need of a hip or knee replacement is well worth it.
On the other side of the coin, there are patients who are skeptical alongside those who’ve tried stem cell injections and been disappointed by the results (or lack thereof). Since the procedure can be quite costly, especially in Southern California, the stakes are higher. With a single treatment episode running $1500 and greater (some reported more than $15,000 for the therapy), it’s important to do your homework and be hopeful that the procedure could work for you. Always consult your care team about whether or not they believe you can benefit from this alternative treatment before shelling out the cash.
Remember to do your research before diving in head-first with stem cell therapy. Since it is so new, evidence of the effectiveness of stem cell therapy is not proven. Stories of patient success are anecdotal in nature and not necessarily scientifically proven. Also, know that stem cell injections have not been approved by the FDA to treat arthritis.
Before we recommend the popular clinics in the Los Angeles area for joint stem cell therapy, let’s break down what exactly “stem cell therapy” injections are.
What is Stem Cell Therapy for Hip and Knee Pain & Arthritis?
Stem cells are “undifferentiated” cells that are able to develop into other types of cells. In other words, stem cells can be looked at as a sort of “magic cell” that can turn into another kind of cell. Stem cells are also anti-inflammatory and regenerative. Since arthritis is an inflammatory and degenerative disease, the theory is that stem cells when injected into an arthritic knee or hip joint can counteract some of the damage, inflammation, and swelling.
During hip and knee stem cell therapy, the patient’s own stem cells are extracted from their body. They are usually taken from fat tissue, circulating blood and blood marrow. The stem cells are then reinjected into the troubled joint area, with the aim of healing the area and growing new, healthy tissue. This is the primary difference between standard cortisone and viscosupplementation (also known as rooster or gel) injections. Standard injections only relieve some of the pain and inflammation associated with some joint conditions. These injections cannot heal or “reverse” any damage and bone degradation that has already occurred—something that stem cell therapy claims to do.
A single stem cell injection episode is 2 sessions (1 to extract and reinject stem cells and a second for a platelet injection (similar to PCP). If it works, it can last 3-4 months and be repeated 1-2 times a year.
Problems with Stem Cell Therapy
- Extracting bone marrow is painful.
- There is a low risk of infection (same with any type of joint injection)
- Low risk of tissue damage and nerve damage.
- Costly. It’s the most expensive injection type for hip and knee arthritis and joint pain.
- The overall effectiveness and long-term effects are unknown since it has not been tested or researched over a long-period.
Now that you’ve got the basic information about stem cell injections, you can better decide if this therapy option is for you.
